Title: Alaafin Demands Revocation of Ooni’s Chieftaincy Conferment Within 48 Hours Date Published: 18 August 2025 Description: The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has called on the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to revoke the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland recently conferred on business tycoon, Engineer Dotun Sanusi. In a strongly worded statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the action of the Ooni as “an affront” to the revered stool of Oyo, stressing that only the Alaafin holds the exclusive right to bestow titles covering the entirety of Yorubaland.Quoting a Supreme Court ruling, the statement argued that the Ooni’s authority is limited to Oranmiyan Local Government — now split into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South — and does not extend to chieftaincy titles with pan-Yoruba significance.“The Ooni of Ife is behaving as if there is no authority to call him to order. This so-called conferment is ultra vires and derogatory to the Titan of Yorubaland. We demand its revocation within 48 hours or he will face the consequences,” the statement read.Oba Owoade further recalled his unity tour across Yorubaland, where he stressed the need for peace and solidarity among Yoruba monarchs, noting that development cannot be achieved without unity. However, the Alaafin’s camp accused the Ooni of misconstruing these peace efforts as weakness, thereby making decisions “derogatory to the Titan of Yorubaland.”The demand for revocation is expected to heighten tension within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy as both first-class monarchs lay claim to cultural supremacy in the region.
