Title: Rivers Rolls Out 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance to Honour Veterans, Fallen Heroes Date Published: 08 January 2026 Description: The Rivers State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of military veterans, widows of fallen officers and personnel in active service as it unveiled a full programme of activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations.The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Benibo Anabraba, gave the assurance on Thursday during the Central Planning Committee meeting held in Port Harcourt.Dr Anabraba said the state government has remained consistent in supporting veterans and the families of fallen heroes, stressing that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.He commended members of the planning committee for their roles in the successful Emblem Appeal Fund ceremony recently held in the state and urged them to intensify efforts to ensure the remaining activities record resounding success.According to the SSG, the week-long remembrance activities will commence on Friday, January 9, with Juma’at prayers at the Rivers State Central Mosque, Port Harcourt Township.He disclosed that the Wife of the Governor, Lady Valerie Fubara, will host a special programme to celebrate and interact with widows and veterans as part of efforts to honour their sacrifices.Dr Anabraba explained that on Saturday, January 10, a Humanitarian Outreach, Family and Community Day will be hosted for widows and veterans by Lady Valerie Siminalayi Fubara.The programme will continue on Sunday, January 11, with an interdenominational church thanksgiving service at St. Cyprian Anglican Church, Port Harcourt Township.He added that the grand finale, the wreath-laying ceremony, will take place on Thursday, January 15, at the Isaac Boro Park Cenotaph in Port Harcourt.One of the major highlights of the event, Dr Anabraba noted, will be the laying of wreaths by Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, alongside heads of security agencies in the state.The Rivers State Government said the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day is designed to honour the courage, sacrifices and enduring legacy of Nigeria’s fallen heroes while reaffirming support for those they left behind.
