Title: FG Begins Implementation of ASUU Pay Rise, Allowances Date Published: 10 February 2026 Description: The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions contained in its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), including salary and allowance adjustments for academic staff in federal universities.In a directive issued on Monday to vice-chancellors of federal universities, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced a 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, with effect from January 1, 2026.Alausa reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic staff and ensuring stability within the university system, noting that some federal universities had already reflected the increment in their salary payments.He directed all federal universities to ensure full compliance by incorporating the approved increase into their payroll systems so that all eligible academic staff benefit.The minister also stressed the need for strict adherence to the implementation of the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA), explaining that its payment has been approved, circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), and provided for in the 2026 budget.University managements were urged to deploy available resources to ensure the timely payment of CATA in line with NSIWC guidelines.According to Alausa, prompt implementation of both the CAA increase and CATA would boost staff morale, strengthen the academic environment, and enhance teaching, research and learning outcomes.He reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to honour its agreements with education stakeholders, stressing its commitment to dialogue, transparency, industrial harmony and the continuous improvement of quality education in Nigeria.
