Title: Tinubu Mourns Jesse Jackson, Hails Him as Friend of Nigeria and Africa Date Published: 17 February 2026 Description: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned American civil rights leader and Baptist preacher, Jesse Jackson, describing him as a steadfast friend of Nigeria, Africa, and oppressed peoples across the world. In a tribute issued on Tuesday, Tinubu said Jackson passed away in the United States at the age of 84, noting that his death marked the end of an era defined by courage, moral clarity, and an unwavering commitment to justice. The President recalled that Jackson rose to global prominence as a young civil rights activist alongside Martin Luther King Jr., championing the dignity of Black people, the marginalised, and the voiceless in America and beyond.According to Tinubu, the late cleric was also a formidable international voice against apartheid in South Africa, playing a key role in campaigns that led to the release of Nelson Mandela and other leaders of the African National Congress from prison. He also helped mobilise global support for sanctions against the apartheid regime. The President further noted that during Nigeria’s years of military dictatorship, Jackson stood firmly in defence of human rights and the restoration of democratic governance. He recalled that Jackson served as Special Envoy to Nigeria and Africa under then U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1997 and 1999.Tinubu said Jackson’s contributions extended beyond advocacy, as he worked to promote civil liberties, democracy, and good governance across Africa, while also facilitating stronger engagement between African leaders and the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus to advance the continent’s interests in Washington.Describing Jackson as a servant-leader whose influence transcended borders, Tinubu said his life embodied the universal ideals of justice and human progress.“Even as age and illness tempered his physical strength, his moral voice remained powerful, urging humanity to never stop fighting for what is right and to always keep hope alive,” the President said.Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Jackson’s soul and extended condolences to his family, the people of the United States, and all who were inspired by his lifelong struggle for equality and justice.
