Title: FCT Council Polls: Wike Declares Friday Work-Free, Orders Movement Restriction Date Published: 20 February 2026 Description: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday a work-free day across the territory ahead of Saturday’s area councils’ election.Wike announced the decision in a special broadcast on Thursday, stating that the approval was granted by Bola Tinubu to allow residents travel to their respective communities to participate fully in the polls.The minister also announced a restriction of movement within the Federal Capital Territory from 8:00 p.m. on Friday to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, election day.According to him, the restriction is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process across the six area councils of the FCT.“Consequently, all security agencies are directed to ensure strict compliance with this directive,” Wike said.He urged residents to come out en masse to exercise their civic responsibility, describing the election as a crucial opportunity to shape the future of the territory.“On Saturday, February 21, we will all have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great FCT. The election of either new or returning chairmen and councillors for the six area councils is a momentous occasion,” the minister said.Wike appealed to voters to conduct themselves responsibly, stressing the need for peaceful participation and respect for the electoral process.“As we exercise our democratic right, let us do so in an orderly and lawful manner.
