Title: Tinubu Hails Wike as APC Sweeps Majority of FCT Council Polls Date Published: 22 February 2026 Description: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for what he described as impactful governance in the nation’s capital, saying the minister’s achievements translated into electoral success for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded Area Council elections. The elections, conducted on Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were held across the six FCT area councils—Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada and Kuje. INEC also conducted by-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies in Rivers State, as well as Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State. Results so far show a strong outing for the APC in the FCT, with the party winning four chairmanship seats in AMAC, Bwari, Kwali and Abaji. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched the Gwagwalada chairmanship, while the result of the Kuje election is still being awaited. In AMAC, incumbent chairman Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was re-elected after polling 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast. In Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku emerged winner with 18,466 votes, defeating candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). The APC also recorded victories in Kwali, where Daniel Nuhu polled 17,032 votes, and in Abaji, where Umar Abdullahi Abubakar won with 15,535 votes.Reacting to the outcome, President Tinubu, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, congratulated all winners of the elections and praised INEC, security agencies and other stakeholders for the peaceful and successful conduct of the polls. The President urged the elected officials to govern with humility, patriotism and dedication, describing the mandate given to them by voters as a sacred trust. He also applauded the courage and discipline of all contestants, noting that democratic culture is strengthened through participation and healthy competition.President Tinubu particularly lauded Wike, despite his membership of the opposition PDP, for delivering infrastructural and administrative results in the FCT, which he said yielded political dividends for the APC at the polls. The President further called on INEC to sustain and improve efforts toward delivering even more credible and exemplary electoral processes, stressing that the successful conduct of the elections reinforces Nigeria’s democratic institutions and values.
