Title: Army GOC Escapes Ambush as Troops Kill Five Lakurawa Terrorists in Kebbi Date Published: 24 February 2026 Description: The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Koughna, on Monday survived an ambush by suspected members of the Lakurawa Terrorists Group near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.The incident occurred while the GOC, who also serves as Commander, Sector 2 of Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma, was travelling with his convoy to visit frontline troops deployed in the state. The convoy reportedly came under intense gunfire as it passed through a volatile forested area.Confirming the incident, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division/Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the troops swiftly responded to the attack with superior firepower. He noted that the decisive counter-action led to the neutralisation of five terrorists and the successful repelling of the ambush.According to him, the operation not only ensured the safety of the GOC and his team but also disrupted the plans of the terrorists, serving as a strong deterrent to criminal elements operating in the area.Osoba added that after the encounter, troops carried out a thorough sweep of the vicinity, leading to the recovery of a cache of arms, ammunition and other items. Recovered materials included one OJC gun, one PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing ₦840,000, two mobile phones and five motorcycles.He assured that troops would continue to maintain a strong presence in the area to prevent further attacks, stressing that the operation reflects the resolve of the 8 Division to protect civilians and eliminate terrorist threats across the North West region.
