Title: EFCC Explains Delay in Prosecuting El-Rufai Over Corruption Allegations Date Published: 25 February 2026 Description: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained that it is yet to charge a former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, to court because investigations into corruption allegations against him are still ongoing.A source close to the commission told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the EFCC was conducting what it described as a thorough and professional investigation and would not rush to court given the gravity of the allegations.According to the source, El-Rufai was interrogated by the EFCC for three days after honouring an invitation on Monday, February 16, and was held in custody for two nights before being released on administrative bail on Wednesday, February 18.“We are still investigating the former governor and have not concluded our work. That is why he has not been charged to court,” the source said, adding that the commission would only proceed to prosecution after completing investigations into the various allegations. The source further disclosed that immediately after El-Rufai’s release by the EFCC, he was taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), noting that EFCC investigations would continue after the ICPC concludes its own process.Meanwhile, an aide to the former governor, Muyiwa Adekeye, said in a statement that El-Rufai had, as of Tuesday, spent nine days in the custody of the two anti-graft agencies.Adekeye added that El-Rufai’s lawyers had yet to receive a response from the ICPC regarding a bail application submitted on his behalf, alleging that no remand order had been shown to justify his continued detention beyond the constitutionally prescribed 48-hour period without charge.
