Title: Tinubu Chairs Police Council Meeting to Confirm Olatunji Disu as IGP Date Published: 02 March 2026 Description: President Bola Tinubu on Monday presided over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider the appointment of Olatunji Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).The session, which began at about 2:15 pm at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, is in line with the Police Act 2020, requiring the Police Council to deliberate on the nominee before the President transmits the name to the Senate for confirmation.Disu, 59, has been serving as acting IGP since Wednesday, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who officially cited family reasons for stepping down. However, reports indicate that Egbetokun’s exit was linked to his resistance to presidential directives on VIP protection duties, opposition to state policing reforms, and alleged internal conflicts within the force. The Police Council, chaired by the President, comprises all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP. Monday’s meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Head of Civil Service, Didi Walson-Jack, several state governors, the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, and relevant ministers.During his decoration ceremony, President Tinubu tasked Disu with making the Nigeria Police Force “better, more effective and more responsive to the needs of Nigerians,” emphasizing integrity, officer welfare, and restoring public confidence in the police.Disu, a Lagos Island native, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in Public Administration and Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology. Notably, he served under Tinubu during the latter’s tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007, acting as Aide-de-Camp while Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer.Once confirmed by the Senate, Disu will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, assuming leadership of the force at a critical juncture in Nigeria’s security landscape.
