Title: Osun Senator Lere Oyewumi Defects from PDP to Accord Party Date Published: 09 March 2026 Description: The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, marking another significant shift in the political landscape of Osun State.Oyewumi, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections, announced his defection in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo. Until his exit, he was the last PDP senator from Osun State, following the earlier defections of Senators Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi to the All Progressives Congress (APC).The PDP in Osun had also lost three members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria to the APC during a wave of defections that affected the party in 2025, further weakening its presence in the state.Although the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, had defected to the Accord Party in December 2025, Oyewumi remained with the PDP until now. However, speculation over his continued membership intensified following the recent defection of six House of Representatives members from the state to the Accord Party. The political realignment in the state also saw 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the PDP platform move to Accord in what observers described as an effort to reunite with the governor.According to a statement issued by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator formally registered as a member of the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, located in Irewole Local Government Area. The statement said Oyewumi was officially received into the party by the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and supporters during a ceremony held in his hometown. It added that the senator’s decision followed his earlier resignation from the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences within the opposition party and his determination to strengthen his commitment to the people of his constituency. The statement further noted that Oyewumi’s move reflects his dedication to effective representation, responsive leadership, and policies aimed at promoting meaningful development for the people of Osun West and the wider Osun State.
