Title: Rising Terror Attacks: Defence Minister Summons Service Chiefs for Emergency Meeting Date Published: 11 March 2026 Description: The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting with Nigeria’s top military commanders following a surge in terrorist attacks on military formations in the North-East.The high-level meeting, held at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, brought together key security chiefs to review the security situation and consider fresh strategies to confront insurgents operating in the troubled region.Among those attending the meeting were the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu. Also present were the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass, as well as representatives from the National Intelligence Agency and other senior security officials. The emergency talks come amid growing concern over recent attacks by terrorists on military bases in the North-East, particularly in Borno State, where several officers and soldiers have been killed in renewed insurgent assaults.According to reports, at least three Commanding Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel were recently killed during separate attacks carried out by terrorists in the state. In addition to the fallen officers, several soldiers also lost their lives in the attacks, while hundreds of civilians abducted during the raids remain in captivity.Addressing journalists briefly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, the Defence Minister acknowledged that the military had suffered casualties but insisted that insurgents had recorded even greater losses. He said the security leadership had resolved to reassess and strengthen operational strategies in order to intensify the fight against terrorism and restore stability to the region.“We know we have recorded some casualties, but it is more on the side of the terrorists,” the retired four-star general said, adding that the armed forces remain determined to confront and defeat the insurgents.
