Title: ADC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Destabilise Party, APC Dismisses Claims Date Published: 18 March 2026 Description: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged a plot by “powerful figures” within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilise its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, claimed that the alleged plan involves imposing an expelled member, Nafiu Bala Gombe, as the party’s national chairman and pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise him.The ADC described the move as a calculated attempt to sow confusion within its ranks and weaken what it called “the only viable opposition platform” in the country. It further alleged that the broader objective is to create conditions that would allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to emerge as the sole credible contender in the 2027 presidential election. The party maintained that there is no ambiguity regarding its leadership, insisting it remains under the control of David Mark following a joint meeting of its National Working Committee and National Executive Committee held in July 2025, which it said was monitored by INEC officials.According to the statement, the ADC is prepared to deploy all lawful means to resist what it termed anti-democratic efforts aimed at undermining opposition politics in Nigeria. It also alleged that the plot is being driven by an unnamed APC governor in collaboration with a senior security official based in Abuja.Reacting to the claims, the APC dismissed the allegations as unfounded. The party’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said the ruling party has no influence over INEC’s operations.“The APC has no control over INEC; we do not dictate what INEC does. So how can the APC influence or pressure INEC in carrying out its constitutional duties?” he said.Ibrahim added that the accusations reflect internal anxiety within the ADC, noting that similar claims have previously been made by opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), without evidence. He maintained that the APC does not interfere in the internal affairs of other political parties and described the ADC’s allegations as baseless.
