...As Bandits Strike Kware, Kill One, Injure Another In Late-night Raid

Panic gripped residents of Kware town, the hometown of Sokoto’s immediate past Deputy Governor, Alhaji Manir Dan’iya, as heavily armed bandits launched a violent night-time attack on Saturday, leaving one person dead and another critically injured.

The attack, which took place around 9 p.m., saw the assailants storm the town in large numbers, shooting sporadically into the air and setting parts of the local grain market ablaze. Kware is also home to the state’s only psychiatric hospital.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, said two people were shot during the attack. “One died shortly after being taken to the hospital, while the other is currently receiving treatment and responding well,” he stated.

Rufa’i added that swift reinforcement from security operatives helped to repel the attackers and restore calm to the area.

A traditional titleholder in the community, who spoke under condition of anonymity, corroborated the police account and provided further insight into how the bandits infiltrated the town. “They came through the back entrance of the market and began shooting indiscriminately,” he said. “As they fled, they also set a borehole at the town’s main cemetery on fire.”

He noted that this was not the first time the market had been targeted by criminal elements.

The latest attack has heightened fears among residents, raising urgent questions about security in rural parts of Sokoto State.

Investigations are ongoing, and the police have assured residents of increased patrols and intelligence gathering to forestall further incidents.
