Renowned preacher and founder of The Potter’s House, Bishop Thomas Dexter Jakes, has officially revealed the reasons behind his decision to hand over leadership of the Dallas-based megachurch to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts.
In a heartfelt address, the 66-year-old spiritual leader explained that the decision was not based on family ties, but on years of quiet commitment and spiritual alignment.
“Not because they’re kin,” Jakes said, “but because they’ve immersed themselves into the DNA of this church for years. Sat quiet, preached… What you didn’t know from November forward, they’ve been running the church anyway.”
TD Jakes, who has served in ministry for nearly five decades, described the transition as a natural and spirit-led evolution of leadership, noting that while Sarah and Touré are not meant to replace him, their leadership may extend his legacy.
He emphasized that the couple had already been operating behind the scenes, steering the affairs of the church long before the formal announcement was made.
Jakes’ daughter, Sarah, has become one of the most influential voices in modern ministry, particularly among younger Christians and women, while her husband, Touré Roberts, has led The Potter’s House of Denver and has co-pastored One Church in Los Angeles.
This transition marks a historic moment for The Potter’s House and signals a generational shift in leadership, guided by vision, continuity, and spiritual calling rather than mere succession by bloodline.
