...Foil Attack on Benue Deputy Governor
Tension flared in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Sunday, June 15, 2025, as what began as a peaceful protest over worsening insecurity quickly spiraled into violence, prompting swift intervention by the Benue State Police Command.
The demonstration, held at Wurukum Roundabout, drew scores of aggrieved residents expressing frustration over recent security breaches in the state. However, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the protest was hijacked by disruptive elements, culminating in an attempted attack on the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. John Ode.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, accompanied by the Deputy Governor, had arrived at the protest site in a bid to engage with demonstrators and appeal for calm. However, the crowd reportedly declined to be addressed, escalating tensions.
“Police officers swiftly intervened using non-lethal crowd control measures, including smoke and water cannons, to prevent harm and safely evacuate the Deputy Governor from the scene,” the police statement noted.
While no injuries or casualties were recorded at the protest ground, a more tragic incident occurred hours later in Apir, a community on the outskirts of Makurdi. Hoodlums believed to be sympathetic to the protest intercepted a truck, set it ablaze, and trapped the driver inside, resulting in his death. His identity is yet to be confirmed.
The police have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the violent events and assured the public that investigations are ongoing to track down all culprits and masterminds behind the unrest.
CP Emenari reaffirmed the Command’s support for lawful civic engagement while condemning violence, destruction, and any form of lawlessness.
“We commend the responsible conduct of peaceful protesters and assure the public of our unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the State,” the police stated.
Residents of Benue and across Nigeria are urged to remain vigilant, obey security directives, and explore non-violent means of addressing grievances.
