The long-standing rift between former U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk reignited on Monday, with Trump threatening to unleash the Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on the Tesla CEO.
Trump, in a fiery post on Truth Social, accused Musk of benefiting heavily from government subsidies, saying, “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far… Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
Trump’s remarks come just weeks after Musk exited the DOGE program, which he had led until May to combat wasteful government spending. Tensions boiled over after Musk slammed Trump’s latest spending bill, saying those who supported it despite campaigning on fiscal restraint “should hang their heads in shame.” He further threatened to launch a new political movement — The America Party — if the bill passes.
Trump didn’t hold back, stating: “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE… Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!”
Once political allies, Trump and Musk’s relationship soured after Musk’s departure from the Trump administration. Monday’s online clash signals a full-blown return to hostilities between the two titans ahead of a charged political season in the U.S.
