Celebrated Nigerian author and cultural advocate, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has issued a passionate appeal to parents, urging them to prioritize teaching their children their indigenous languages over foreign ones.

In a recent public statement, Adichie called out the growing trend among African parents, particularly Nigerians, who enrol their children in foreign language classes—such as French—while neglecting their mother tongues.

“Teach your children their language first,” she said. “Please stop that French lesson and start teaching them their language because that’s what will give them confidence.”

Adichie, known for championing African identity and storytelling, emphasized that indigenous languages are not only vital for cultural preservation but also play a critical role in shaping children’s self-esteem and rootedness in their heritage.
