Tech billionaire and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political movement, the \"America Party,\" in a surprise post on Saturday, signalling his deepening discontent with the current state of U.S. politics and an apparent split with former ally, President Donald Trump.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it!” Musk wrote on X, referencing a recent poll he conducted among his millions of followers on the platform.
In a strongly worded follow-up, Musk said, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The announcement comes amid rising tensions between Musk and President Trump, with sources suggesting that the fallout was triggered by recent policy disagreements and Musk\'s criticism of what he perceives as unchecked government spending under both Republican and Democratic leadership.
Musk’s America Party, though still lacking formal registration details, appears to position itself as an anti-establishment platform aiming to challenge both traditional political blocs ahead of the 2028 general election. Political analysts say the move could reshape the U.S. political landscape, especially given Musk’s vast influence, tech-driven reach, and network of followers.
The entrepreneur, who has long criticized the inefficiencies of the political establishment, had previously hinted at greater involvement in national politics, but Saturday’s declaration marks his boldest step yet.
It remains to be seen whether Musk intends to field candidates or run for office himself. However, early reactions to his announcement suggest growing support among disillusioned voters seeking an alternative to the current two-party system.
The White House and Trump campaign have yet to respond officially to Musk’s announcement as of the time of filing this report.
