President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his election victory, which effectively ended all legal contestations surrounding the 2024 governorship poll in the state.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, President Tinubu hailed the ruling as a validation of the democratic process and urged the governor to now focus fully on delivering good governance.
The Supreme Court, in a unanimous verdict, dismissed the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a lack of credible evidence to support claims of electoral irregularities. The verdict upholds the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in September 2024, which saw Okpebholo emerge victorious under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner.
President Tinubu commended Governor Okpebholo for navigating the post-election legal hurdles and advised him to be \"magnanimous in victory\", urging him to unite the people of Edo State and rally all citizens, regardless of political affiliation around a common goal of development and progress.
“Now that the governor has cleared the legal hurdles, it is time for him to accelerate the delivery of exceptional services and good governance to the people of Edo State, which he has already begun to do,” the statement read.
The President also lauded the leadership and members of the APC in Edo State, emphasizing the need for party unity and collective commitment to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to them by the electorate.
