The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. This comes as part of a seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Tinubu.

According to Dr. Tunji-Ojo, the public holiday serves as a mark of respect for the former president’s lifelong commitment to the nation, both as a military leader and democratically elected head of state.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister stated.

He urged citizens to use the day to reflect on the late president’s legacy, values, and contributions, and to uphold the ideals of peace, patriotism, and national unity which he championed during his lifetime.

As earlier announced, national flags are to fly at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, throughout the seven-day mourning period, as a solemn tribute to the late statesman.

The Federal Government also extended its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Interior.

Late Muhammadu Buhari, a former military head of state and two-term civilian president, left office in 2023 after a total of eight years in office. He is remembered for his anti-corruption campaign, infrastructural projects, and influence on national security and governance.
