Police officers attached to the Durumi Divisional Headquarters in Abuja have arrested one Philip Jallo following the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy who drowned in an uncovered septic tank at a residential compound in Durumi 2.
The incident, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, July 16, 2025, at about 9:00 p.m., has sparked outrage in the community over what authorities describe as gross negligence on the part of the suspect.
According to the FCT Police Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the septic tank—reportedly filled with human waste—had long posed a danger to residents. Neighbours are said to have repeatedly appealed to the suspect to cover the soakaway, but no action was taken.
The victim, who was playing in the compound at the time, reportedly slipped and fell into the open tank. Despite efforts to rescue him, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The FCT Commissioner of Police expressed profound sadness over the heartbreaking incident, describing it as a preventable tragedy. While commiserating with the bereaved family, he urged residents to prioritize environmental safety and cautioned that negligent acts leading to the loss of life will not be tolerated.
“This is a painful reminder that all residents must take responsibility for their surroundings,” said the CP. “We call on parents and guardians to monitor their children closely, and for everyone to ensure their environment is safe for all, especially minors.”
The suspect, Philip Jallo, is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, also echoed the CP’s sentiments, calling on Abuja residents to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing similar incidents in their communities.
