The Edo State Police Command has announced the commencement of an investigation into the alleged brutalisation of Hon. Okai Akhani by suspected members of a local vigilante group in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, has sparked widespread outrage following the circulation of a viral video showing the lawmaker being assaulted. In response to the public outcry, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has ordered a full-scale investigation to uncover the facts, identify those involved, and ensure justice is served.
In a press statement issued on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the police condemned the alleged assault and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law.
\"The Command condemns in strong terms any form of unlawful assault, cruel treatment, or abuse of authority by individuals or groups operating under any guise,\" the statement read.
While acknowledging the role of vigilante groups in supporting community policing efforts, the Command stressed that such responsibilities must be exercised lawfully and with full respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.
The police have urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that a thorough investigation is underway and updates will be provided in due course.
Hon. Okai Akhani, who is said to be recovering from the incident, is a respected figure in the Auchi area. His alleged assault has drawn condemnation from civil society groups, rights activists, and concerned citizens across the state.
