Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched an ambitious environmental initiative with the distribution of 5.5 million tree seedlings across the state’s 44 local government areas. The project, unveiled on Monday, August 4, at the historic Yanbawa Shelter Belt in Makoda LGA, is aimed at curbing desert encroachment and promoting long-term environmental sustainability.
Announcing the effort via his official X handle, Governor Yusuf emphasized the importance of tree planting in protecting Kano’s ecosystem, noting that schools, communities, and public institutions will benefit from the seedlings.
To ensure the success of the initiative, he also directed all local government chairmen to establish Tree Planting Committees under their respective agriculture departments. The move follows the recent rehabilitation of major nurseries in Gwarzo and Garko LGAs, further signaling the administration’s commitment to environmental preservation.
