The Kano State Commissioner for Transportation, Ibrahim Namadi, has resigned from his position just hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received a report from an investigative panel probing Namadi’s alleged involvement in securing bail for a suspected drug baron, Sulaiman Danwawu.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Namadi’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa. According to the statement, the commissioner’s decision was driven by the sensitive nature of the issue and the broader public interest.
“As a member of an administration that has consistently championed the fight against the illicit drug trade, it behoves me to take this step—painful as it may be,” Namadi was quoted as saying. While maintaining his innocence, he reaffirmed his commitment to good governance and thanked Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve Kano State.
Governor Yusuf, who had earlier suspended Namadi pending the outcome of the probe, has accepted the resignation. The governor reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on drug-related crimes and emphasized the importance of discipline and accountability in public service.
He further urged all political appointees to exercise caution when handling sensitive matters and to always seek proper authorization when engaging in issues of public concern.
The resignation follows heightened scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding the alleged unlawful release of a drug trafficking suspect from custody—an incident that prompted the governor to constitute an investigative panel two weeks ago.
