The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected notorious armed robbery gang leader, Imoh Gavin Akpan, following a shootout with officers in Ikot Ekpene.
According to a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, Akpan — who was already in police custody — led operatives to a hideout in Mbiaso village believed to be the gang’s armory. On arrival, the team came under heavy gunfire from other gang members.
In the exchange of bullets, Akpan attempted to escape but was shot. He was taken to hospital, where a medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited for autopsy.
Items recovered from the scene include a locally made shotgun, two expended cartridges, and one live cartridge. Police say investigations are ongoing, with intensified efforts to track down the fleeing gang members.
