Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old pastor, identified as Pastor Ifediorah Onyeibor Joseph, over the alleged dehumanization of minors during a church program in Port Harcourt.
The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media showing children subjected to inhumane treatment in a church setting. According to police sources, Pastor Ifediorah allegedly organized a three-day program for children, which he described as a “spiritual cleaning” exercise, claiming the idea came to him through divine inspiration.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives stormed the church premises and apprehended the pastor along with several members of his congregation. The minors involved were rescued and placed under protective care.
Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday. She noted that preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the incident and any possible violations of the law.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, urges members of the public to remain calm as we continue our investigation. The safety and dignity of vulnerable persons, especially minors, remain a top priority for the Command,” Iringe-Koko said.
The police have also called on residents to report any suspicious activities or cases of abuse to the nearest police station or relevant security agency.
