Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has formally reconciled with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, after years of strained relations caused by his past criticisms of the monarch.

Igboho, during a visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Saturday, openly admitted his past errors and tendered a heartfelt apology before the monarch and his council of chiefs.

The activist, who once spearheaded the Yoruba self-determination movement, confessed that his remarks against the revered traditional ruler were disrespectful and regrettable.

“You can abuse a king behind his back, but you dare not do that in his presence,” Igboho said. “I have abused you before, which I had already apologized for behind your back. But today, I am here, face to face with the deity (Ooni), to seek forgiveness.”

The reconciliation comes years after Igboho launched scathing attacks on Yoruba leaders, including the Ooni, President Bola Tinubu, and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde. In 2021, during a virtual town hall meeting with the Yoruba diaspora, he accused them of being subservient to the Fulani political class, alleging that they visited Abuja only to “collect money.”

At the time, he vowed that properties belonging to such leaders would be attacked, describing them as “lazy” and “slaves to the Fulani.” His remarks against the Ooni, in particular, triggered widespread outrage among Yoruba elders and traditional institutions.
