The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from his position.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter he personally signed, dated August 24, 2025, and read on the floor of the House.
The letter, titled “Resignation As The Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly”, stated in part: “I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025.
This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state. I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals.
I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency.”
Dajoh’s resignation comes barely two days after the Assembly suspended four lawmakers — Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa) — for six months.
The suspension followed an alleged plot to impeach Dajoh on Thursday night. During plenary, the Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer, moved a motion of urgent importance for their suspension, accusing them of attempting to plunge the Assembly into crisis.
Following the adoption of the motion, the Speaker directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort the affected lawmakers out of the chamber. Dajoh also appointed Hon. Audu Elias as the new spokesperson of the Assembly to replace Berger.
Meanwhile, Governor Hyacinth Alia has distanced himself from the political developments in the House. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the Governor maintained that he had no hand in the alleged plot to unseat the Speaker.
“The governor, Hyacinth Alia, is not aware of and has no involvement whatsoever in any purported attempt to remove the Speaker or in any activities currently taking place in the Benue State House of Assembly,” the statement read.
It added that Governor Alia continues to enjoy a cordial working relationship with the Assembly and remains committed to supporting it in delivering its legislative duties for the overall development of Benue State.
The resignation also comes on the heels of a tense plenary session last Thursday, where the Assembly confirmed six commissioner nominees but rejected the nomination of Prof. Timothy Ornguga following four petitions from his former students and questions over his academic qualifications. Another nominee, James Dwen, was also rejected after failing to satisfactorily defend allegations contained in petitions against him.
With Dajoh’s resignation, political watchers are keenly observing how the leadership dynamics in the 10th Benue State House of Assembly will unfold in the coming days.
