Earlier on Sunday, August 24, 2025, reports circulated that youths of Nkpolu, led by their president, Comrade Owhonda Chamberlain, publicly flogged a police inspector, Joshua Eyam, for allegedly engaging in drug abuse. Eyewitnesses claimed the officer was caught taking mkpuru mmiri (methamphetamine) with two other men, prompting the youths—who have launched a campaign against hard drugs—to descend on him and flog him publicly.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions. While some commended the youths’ anti-drug stance, others condemned the mob action against a uniformed officer.

However, a statement issued later by the Rivers State Police Command through its spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, presented a different version of events.

According to the police report, Inspector Eyam (identified officially as Joshua Nyian) alleged that while returning from work, he stopped at Nkpolu to visit his pregnant woman friend. He claimed that the Youth President, Community Chairman, and about twenty youths attacked him, seized his ID card and phone, recorded him on video, and forcefully collected ₦78,000 from him.

The officer further alleged that the Youth President had been making advances to his woman friend, suggesting this may have motivated the assault.

The Command confirmed that the officer’s statement was recorded, and he was issued a medical form for treatment. It also stated that efforts are ongoing to bring the Youth President and other suspects forward for questioning.

Meanwhile, the police assured that justice will be served and urged community leaders to caution their youths against taking the law into their own hands.

The Nkpolu incident remains under investigation, with two sharply different narratives fueling public debate: Was the officer a victim of mob injustice or was he punished for alleged drug abuse?
