A Federal High Court has sentenced Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on multiple terrorism-related charges. Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho stated that although Kanu’s conduct since 2015 had been marked by delays, unruly behaviour, and a lack of remorse, the court was compelled to temper justice with mercy.

The judge revealed that the court initially considered the death penalty due to the gravity of the offences and their impact on residents of the South-East. However, referencing biblical teachings on mercy and noting global opposition to capital punishment, Justice Omotosho opted for a life sentence on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6.

Kanu was further handed 20 years’ imprisonment on count 3 and 5 years on count 7, all without the option of a fine. The sentences will run concurrently.

Citing Kanu’s history of violent tendencies and previous unruly conduct in court, the judge ordered that he be kept in protective custody under strict supervision, with no access to digital devices except under close monitoring by the Office of the National Security Adviser. The transmitter used in the alleged broadcasts was also forfeited to the Federal Government.
