The family of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has expressed shock following his involvement in a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the Makun area of Ogun State on Monday. The British-Nigerian boxer was said to be travelling from Lagos to his family home when the crash occurred.
A family member, who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity, described the incident as devastating news for the family. The relative said they were praying for Joshua’s speedy recovery and for the souls of those who lost their lives in the accident to rest in peace, adding that the boxer was expected home ahead of the New Year.
Earlier reports indicated that Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle reportedly died on the spot. He was said to have been taken to hospital for medical attention after receiving first aid at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command said the crash occurred near a Danco petrol station close to the Sagamu Interchange. Police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Bassey, stated that the accident involved a Lexus SUV in which Joshua was travelling, noting that the boxer, who was seated at the rear of the vehicle, sustained only minor injuries and is in a stable condition.
