The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed profound shock and deep sorrow over the death of seven journalists from Gombe State who lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, the Union described the incident as a devastating blow to the journalism profession in Gombe State and across the country, noting that the deceased were committed media practitioners who served the public with courage, integrity and professionalism.

On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) and the entire NUJ family nationwide, the Union extended heartfelt condolences to the Gombe State Council of the NUJ, as well as the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased journalists, assuring them of its solidarity at this difficult time.

The NUJ also used the occasion to reiterate calls for improved road safety measures and responsible driving, stressing that the tragic incident highlighted the dangers journalists often face while discharging their professional duties.

In a follow-up statement signed by the National Secretary, Comrade Achike Chude, the Union announced the declaration of a three-day mourning period in honour of the fallen journalists. The mourning period, according to the NUJ, is to be observed across all zones, councils and chapels nationwide.

However, the Union directed that journalistic activities should continue during the mourning period in the spirit of fraternity and solidarity, stressing the need to ensure that the sacrifice of the deceased colleagues was not in vain.
