Opobo Kingdom has entered a period of national mourning following the death of its revered monarch, King Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, CFR, DSSRS, Jeki V, JP, the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Opobo Kingdom.
The announcement was made by the Amanyanabo-in-Council and the King Jaja Executive Authority after extensive consultations. King Jaja, who ascended the throne in 1980, passed away in 2025, leaving behind a distinguished legacy spanning more than four decades.
According to a statement signed by Alabo Princewill N. Wogo Dappa, Vice Chairman of the Opobo Council of Alapu, the late king was a direct descendant of the kingdom’s royal lineage and carried on the traditions of his forebears, some of whom served in Nigeria’s Eastern House of Chiefs. Over the years, he became recognized as one of Rivers State’s foremost traditional rulers.
In addition to his royal duties, King Jaja contributed to national development through his role in academia, serving as Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University, Katsina-Alu, in Katsina State.
The council confirmed that, in accordance with Opobo customs, a formal national mourning period will be observed across the kingdom, during which all forms of festivities will be suspended. Traditional regulations on mourning attire will also be enforced, with certain clothing and uniforms restricted for both men and women.
The people of Opobo Kingdom are urged to unite in grief, while individuals, corporate organizations, and friends of the kingdom are invited to pay tributes and support the Amanyanabo-in-Council during this period of sorrow.
The statement, dated December 31, 2025, was officially approved by the Opobo Council of Alapu.
