The National Assembly has moved to allay public concerns over alleged discrepancies in recently gazetted Tax Acts by opening its official records for public review and verification.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Director of Information of the National Assembly, Mr. Bullah Bi-Allah, said the management had directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to release the transmitted tax bills, including their certificate pages, to enable members of the public confirm the authenticity of the documents signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.
According to him, the Assembly noted claims of inconsistencies between the votes and proceedings of the legislature and the versions of the tax laws published in the official gazette. The decision to make certified documents available, he said, was in response to growing public calls for transparency in the legislative process.
Bi-Allah disclosed that despite the widespread public interest generated by the issue, only a few individuals had formally applied for Certified True Copies (CTCs) of the harmonised tax bills, stressing that all such requests had been duly processed.
He further stated that the Clerk of the National Assembly is working closely with the Federal Government Printing Press to ensure the publication of the properly certified and assented Acts in line with statutory requirements, adding that the gazettes were expected to be ready on Thursday.
While clarifying institutional roles, he noted that although the Clerk is responsible for initiating the gazetting process, the statutory duty of printing and publication rests with the Federal Government Printing Press.
To prevent future controversies, Bi-Allah said the National Assembly would review its procedures on the transmission and gazetting of bills. He explained that henceforth, all bills forwarded for presidential assent would be routed through presidential liaison officers.
He added that no request for the gazetting of an Act of the National Assembly would be entertained by the printing press unless initiated by the Clerk of the National Assembly or an authorised representative.
The National Assembly, he said, commended Nigerians for their interest and constructive engagement, noting that such scrutiny strengthens transparency, accountability and professionalism in the legislative process.
