Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been arraigned before the Federal High Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State, over alleged assault, theft and related offences.

Portable was brought before the court on Monday on a nine-count charge bordering on assault, causing bodily harm, theft and resisting lawful arrest. The charges reportedly stem from an incident that occurred on New Year’s Day at the singer’s bar located in the Iyana Ilogbo area of the state.

According to the prosecution, the musician allegedly assaulted his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple, as well as several police officers who were said to be carrying out their lawful duties at the time. Among the officers allegedly attacked is a female inspector identified as Ogungbe Olayemi.

The charge sheet also listed other alleged victims, including Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah, who were said to have suffered varying degrees of harm during the incident.

In addition, Portable was accused of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million, allegedly belonging to one of the complainants, Ileyemi Damilola.

During the proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple appeared in court and testified as witnesses. However, Ashabi herself was not present at the hearing.

The presiding judge declined the defendant’s bail application, citing the absence of one of the key witnesses, the allegedly assaulted police officer. The court subsequently ordered that Portable be remanded in custody pending further hearing.

The case was adjourned until January 19 for continuation of trial.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that it is investigating a viral video circulating on social media, which allegedly shows the singer being assaulted while in police custody. The command said the investigation is to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the video and ensure accountability where necessary.
