Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have announced an indefinite strike scheduled to commence at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026, over what they described as lingering and unresolved labour issues.
The workers, operating under the umbrella of the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC), said the strike would involve all categories of staff across the FCTA, including employees of the College of Education, Zuba, as well as senior secondary schools within the territory.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, the President of FCT JUAC, Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer, said the decision to embark on the strike followed persistent “breach of trust, inaction and deliberate demoralisation” of workers by the FCT Administration.
In an address titled “A Plethora of Festering Issues,” Iortyer outlined an 11-point list of grievances against the FCTA management, accusing it of financial impropriety, systemic failures and bad faith in its dealings with staff.
Prominent among the complaints is the alleged non-remittance of pension contributions and National Housing Fund (NHF) deductions, which the union described as a serious threat to the future security of its members.
The union also demanded the immediate removal of retired Directors and Permanent Secretaries, describing the extension of their tenures as a violation of the Public Service Rules.
Iortyer further faulted the promotion exercise recently approved for about 2,000 staff out of more than 7,000 workers who participated in the 2024 promotion examination, alleging that the process was deliberately skewed to ensure mass failure and avoid payment of promotion arrears.
Other issues raised by the union include unpaid promotion arrears, poor working conditions, staff intimidation, lack of training opportunities and the non-payment of enforcement officers of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).
“We demand immediate action on these issues. We will not be silenced by continued inaction,” Iortyer warned, formally declaring the commencement of an indefinite strike from Monday.
The strike is expected to disrupt activities across the FCTA Secretariat, Departments and Agencies (SDAs).
As at the time of filing this report, the Federal Capital Territory Administration had not issued an official response to the strike declaration.
