Police Promote 74,352 Officers Nationwide, Dismiss Irregularity Claims

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the promotion of 74,352 officers across various ranks nationwide since January 2025, dismissing allegations of irregularities in the exercise.

A summary released by the Force Public Relations Department showed that the promotions cut across both senior and junior cadres, from the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police to Corporal.

According to the breakdown, 45 Commissioners of Police were promoted to Assistant Inspectors-General, while 69 Deputy Commissioners advanced to the rank of Commissioner of Police. In addition, 156 Assistant Commissioners were elevated to Deputy Commissioners, 270 Chief Superintendents to Assistant Commissioners, and 1,014 Superintendents to Chief Superintendents of Police.

The exercise also saw 615 Deputy Superintendents promoted to Superintendents of Police, 980 Assistant Superintendents of Police I elevated to Deputy Superintendents, and 30,828 Inspectors advanced to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police.

At the junior cadre level, 16,970 Sergeants were promoted to Inspectors, 8,840 Corporals advanced to Sergeants, while 58 Police Constables were promoted to the rank of Corporal.

The NPF said the promotions reflected its commitment to merit-based career progression and the recognition of professionalism and dedication among officers nationwide.

Reacting to claims of impropriety, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said the Force would not be distracted by allegations aimed at undermining its credibility.

“There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. What we have is a system that rewards diligence, professionalism and proven capacity,” he said.

The Police authorities reiterated that the exercise was conducted in strict adherence to established procedures and standards, reaffirming their commitment to transparency, merit and institutional integrity.
