Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Thursday conducted a search at the residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as investigations into alleged financial misconduct continue.

The development was confirmed by El-Rufai’s Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, who disclosed the visit in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“UPDATE: The residence of Malam Nasir @elrufai was today searched by the ICPC,” Adekeye wrote.

Sources indicated that the search may be linked to ongoing investigations into activities during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State, although the commission has yet to officially state the specific focus of the operation.

The search comes amid heightened scrutiny surrounding the former governor, who has been in ICPC custody since Wednesday night for questioning by investigators.

El-Rufai was taken into ICPC custody shortly after his release on administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which had earlier detained him on Monday after he honoured an invitation by the commission.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the EFCC had been interrogating the former governor over issues related to his time in office before granting him bail.

Reacting to the ICPC action, one of El-Rufai’s lawyers reportedly described the search as unlawful, alleging that it violated established legal procedures and the former governor’s fundamental rights.

The ICPC spokesperson, John Odey, had earlier confirmed that El-Rufai was being questioned by investigators but declined to provide further details, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing inquiry.

He noted that investigations were still in progress and that the commission would communicate its findings at the appropriate time.

The latest development adds to a series of high-profile anti-corruption investigations involving former public office holders, as Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies intensify efforts to address alleged financial improprieties.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the ICPC nor El-Rufai had released further official statements on the outcome of the search.
