PDP Clinches Gwagwalada Chairmanship as INEC Announces Kasim Winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.

The Returning Officer for the poll, Prof. Philip Akpeni, announced the result on Sunday in Gwagwalada, stating that Kasim polled a total of 22,165 votes to secure victory.

Akpeni said the election was held on February 21, 2026, and that the PDP candidate satisfied all requirements of the law to be declared duly elected.

“That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” he announced.

According to the results, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yahaya Usman, came second with 17,788 votes, while Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) placed third with 1,687 votes.

Our Correspondent reported that the chairmanship election was conducted across the 10 wards of the council, including Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, Staff Quarters, Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre and Tunga Maje.

INEC officials described the exercise as orderly, with results collated and announced in line with established electoral guidelines.
