Several communities in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State are now enjoying steady electricity supply following their connection to Aba Power, Nigeria’s newest electricity distribution company based in Aba, Abia State.

Chairman of Etche Local Government Area, Hon. Chima Njoku, described the development as historic, saying it marked the first time in more than ten years that communities in the area would enjoy constant, quality and affordable electricity. Njoku spoke on Sunday, February 22, 2026, while addressing residents who gathered at his office to express gratitude over the restoration of power.

Expressing deep satisfaction, the council boss likened his joy to that of Simeon in the Bible, who rejoiced after seeing the fulfilment of God’s promise, noting that the return of electricity had brought renewed hope and economic relief to the people.

Residents confirmed that the communities had endured prolonged darkness for over a decade. A fish farmer from Umuola community, Mrs Bernadette Obi, praised Njoku for fulfilling a major campaign promise to tackle the persistent electricity challenge in the area. She described him as an exceptional public servant committed to improving the welfare of his people.

According to her, the council chairman procured and installed several distribution transformers across communities to ensure widespread access to electricity and personally initiated discussions with Aba Power because of its reputation for reliable service delivery.

Confirming the development, Aba Power’s Senior Brand and Communication Manager, Mr Edise Ekong, said the company initially expressed reservations, as Etche falls within the operational jurisdiction of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC). However, following engagements involving PHEDC and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), all parties reached an agreement allowing Aba Power to supply electricity to the affected communities.

Ekong said the communities had enjoyed uninterrupted power supply for over a week, adding that customers were satisfied with both the quality of service and tariff. He assured that power would remain steady as long as gas supply was sustained, except in cases of unforeseen local challenges such as vandalism or damage to infrastructure.

He further disclosed that discussions were ongoing with other state governments, communities and large manufacturing firms outside Aba Power’s current ring-fenced area, noting that the company would make details public at the appropriate time.
