President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The President’s decision followed the submission of Egbetokun’s resignation letter, in which he cited pressing family considerations. Tinubu received the letter earlier on Monday and expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year tenure expected to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. During his tenure, the Presidency noted his professionalism and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture.
Announcing Disu’s appointment, the President said the new Acting IGP’s experience, operational depth and leadership capacity would provide steady direction for the police amid prevailing security challenges.
In accordance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination for substantive appointment. Following the council’s deliberation, the nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring the police force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
