The remains of the late Senator Barinada Mpigi were on Monday morning brought into Nigeria amid solemn tributes, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led other dignitaries to receive the body at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Senator Mpigi, a former lawmaker and respected political figure, passed away in London on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 64, after a brief illness.

The arrival of his remains marked the beginning of final rites for the late senator, whose death has drawn widespread condolences from political leaders, associates and constituents across the country.

Wike, who had last week travelled to London to commiserate with the family, was at the forefront of arrangements to ensure the smooth repatriation of the deceased. During that visit, the minister met with the widow and children of the late senator, offering words of comfort and overseeing logistics for the return of the body to Nigeria.

Senator Barinada Mpigi was widely regarded as a committed public servant whose political career spanned several years of active engagement in Nigeria’s democratic process. Known for his grassroots appeal and firm stance on issues affecting his people, Mpigi earned a reputation as a bridge-builder and advocate for development within and beyond his constituency.
