The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has disclosed that it recovered suspected wiretapping devices and other sensitive security materials from the Abuja home of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
According to the anti-graft agency, the items were recovered during a search of the residence conducted in the presence of El-Rufai’s wife, Hadiza, and his son, Mohammed Bello.
In court filings, the ICPC alleged that the former governor declined to cooperate with investigators, opting to remain silent pending his appearance before a court of law. The commission also claimed that an aide connected to the investigation has reportedly fled the country.
The disclosures were made as El-Rufai seeks legal redress and his release from detention. The ICPC said it obtained a 14-day detention order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), noting that the order is due to expire on Thursday.
Denying allegations of unlawful detention, the commission urged the FCT High Court to dismiss the former governor’s suit, which accuses the agency of violating his fundamental rights.
The ICPC further stated that El-Rufai has questions to answer over alleged corruption involving €1.4 million, 180 suspicious transactions amounting to over ₦2.15 billion from a consolidated revenue account linked to Kaduna State internally generated revenue, as well as additional transfers exceeding ₦428 million to undisclosed accounts.
