The Department of State Services has arrested a suspect, Udeme Sunday Stephen, in connection with the recent attack on the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other political figures in Benin, Edo State.
According to Channels Television, the arrest followed what security sources described as a thorough and sustained investigation by the secret police.
It will be recalled that Obi, alongside chieftains of the African Democratic Congress, was attacked last Tuesday at the Benin residence of former national chairman of the APC and ADC chieftain, John Odigie-Oyegun.
Confirming the incident earlier, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, said the attack occurred shortly after the delegation returned from the ADC secretariat.
Tanko explained that the group had gone to formally receive former Edo State Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, who had just joined the ADC before the incident occurred.
Security authorities have yet to disclose further details on the suspect or possible accomplices, but investigations are said to be ongoing.
