The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, clearing the way for his formal swearing-in by Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place during the meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

The Police Council meeting, held at the State House, Abuja, was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other senior government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Didi Walson-Jack.

President Tinubu appointed Disu following the resignation of the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Speaking at the meeting, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the Acting Inspector-General, describing him as a seasoned and exemplary officer. He particularly highlighted Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State between 2015 and 2021, noting that his leadership earned the unit recognition for excellence in crime control.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the President’s choice, saying the appointment reflected Disu’s impressive career record and professionalism.

Similarly, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lauded Disu’s competence, recalling his service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and Officer-in-Charge of the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015. Disu later served as Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, during Wike’s tenure as minister.

Wike described Disu as an efficient crime fighter who strengthened the strategic response of the FCT Police Command to security challenges.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He has risen through the ranks and holds multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.

The Acting Inspector-General has served in several critical operational, investigative and strategic command positions across the country. His last posting was as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos.
