Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has declared that opposition parties in Nigeria have lost their footing, insisting that their influence has waned both at the national level and within Kwara State.

The governor made the assertion on Wednesday following the conclusion of the Kwara State congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where a 34-member executive committee led by Prince Sunday Fagbemi was returned unopposed through affirmation.

The congress was overseen by a national delegation from Abuja, headed by Dr. Alkali Alabe, and attended by party leaders and stakeholders from across the state.

Speaking with journalists after the exercise, AbdulRazaq said recent political realignments and defections into the ruling party clearly showed that opposition parties were rapidly losing relevance.

According to him, the once-dominant People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara has seen most of its members defect to the APC, while a few others moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as having little or no impact in recent elections.

The governor attributed the APC’s expanding dominance to the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he said has provided a clear vision and roadmap for the country, making the party attractive to politicians across divides.

AbdulRazaq, however, cautioned against complacency, stressing that the APC must continue to work hard to sustain public confidence and consolidate its achievements in governance.

On the forthcoming governorship election in the state, the governor said he has no preferred or “anointed” candidate, noting that leadership succession would ultimately be determined by divine grace and the democratic process.

He acknowledged minor internal tensions within the party, describing them as healthy competition arising from the growing number of aspirants, many of whom are currently serving lawmakers at the national and state levels.

AbdulRazaq expressed optimism that whoever succeeds him would surpass his administration’s performance and called for unity and inclusiveness within the party to ensure continued progress in Kwara State.

In his remarks, State APC Chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi urged party members to remain disciplined and united ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing respect for party rules, internal democracy, and loyalty to the party’s leadership.

Fagbemi thanked party leaders and members for the renewed mandate, pledging that the current executive would work tirelessly to secure another decisive victory for the APC in the next election cycle.
