Governor Umaru Fintiri has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Lamurde Local Government Area following renewed violence and security breaches in parts of the area.
The restriction, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Humwashi Wonosikou. The statement said the measure became necessary after fresh attacks and rising tension between communities in the affected area.
According to the government, the violence was reported in the Tshobo and Bwatiye communities, where clashes have led to growing fears among residents. Governor Fintiri described the situation as unacceptable and directed security agencies to strictly enforce the curfew to restore law and order.
The governor urged residents of Lamurde to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security operatives by providing useful information that could help in restoring peace in the area.
Fintiri also warned that the state government would not tolerate acts of violence, stressing that anyone who violates the curfew order would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Communal clashes between the Tshobo and Bwatiye tribes have been a recurring issue in the area. Last year, violence between the groups resulted in loss of lives and the destruction of several homes before the intervention of the state government.
Following the earlier crisis, Governor Fintiri facilitated a peace accord between the communities while security personnel were deployed to maintain stability. However, the latest attack on the Bwatiye community, allegedly carried out by members of the Tshobo tribe, has triggered fresh tensions, prompting the government to enforce the curfew.
