The U.S. Mission Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.

In the advisory released by the U.S. Embassy Abuja, American citizens were urged to exercise heightened vigilance when visiting U.S. diplomatic premises and institutions linked to the United States in the country.

According to the embassy, the potential threat could affect locations including the U.S. Consulate General Lagos and schools affiliated with the U.S., prompting officials to advise Americans to take additional security precautions.

The mission specifically advised U.S. citizens to vary their travel routes and schedules when visiting the embassy, consulate, or related facilities, while maintaining increased awareness of their surroundings to reduce possible risks.

It also encouraged individuals to keep a low profile, avoid predictable routines, and remain alert in public places, particularly crowded areas or during demonstrations.

The advisory further urged citizens to review their personal security plans, ensure their mobile phones remain charged for emergencies, and take note of emergency exits whenever entering public buildings.

Despite the warning, the embassy confirmed that the consular sections of the diplomatic missions in Abuja and Lagos remain open and operational.

The mission said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates through its official website and communication channels.

The United States also advised its citizens to stay informed through the travel advisory system and security alerts provided by the U.S. State Department.

The alert forms part of routine security communication by American diplomatic missions worldwide aimed at ensuring the safety of their citizens living in or traveling abroad.
