Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has acknowledged the shrinking number of governors in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party is not disturbed despite being left with only two governors.

Makinde spoke on Tuesday during an expanded meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja, following the defection of Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara State, from the PDP.

Lawal’s exit leaves Makinde and Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, as the only PDP governors in the country.

Makinde described the current developments within the party as a difficult period for both PDP members and Nigeria’s democracy but maintained that the situation would pass.

He said discussions with political actors familiar with the country’s political history suggest that the present landscape is unprecedented.

“We are only two remaining, but we are not bothered,” the governor said, adding that when the story of the country’s democracy is eventually told, PDP leaders would be remembered for standing with the people.

Makinde urged party members to remain mindful of the role history would record for them during the present political challenges.

Also speaking, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara said the BoT meeting was convened to address the crisis facing the party and chart a path forward.

Wabara noted that the board views the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal as an opportunity for the PDP to “begin again” and reposition itself.

He stressed the need for the party to respect its constitution and the rule of law while taking decisions aimed at restoring stability and getting the party back on track.
