A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fixed May 25, 2027, for its presidential primary election ahead of the next general polls.

The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after the party’s 106th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. The communiqué was read by the National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed. According to the timetable released, submission of the party’s membership register is scheduled for April 10, while State Assembly primaries will hold on May 2, National Assembly primaries on May 9, and governorship primaries on May 16.

The NEC explained that the schedule aligns with the revised timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2027 general elections in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. The party also outlined timelines for resolving disputes that may arise from the primaries and urged party organs and stakeholders to begin preparations and strictly adhere to the approved schedule.

The committee commended the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed for stabilising the party during the transition. It noted the successful conduct of ward and local government congresses and expressed confidence that the state congresses scheduled for the weekend would be peaceful and transparent.

NEC also approved the conduct of zonal congresses in the coming weeks as part of preparations for the party’s National Convention slated for March 29 and 30, where a new National Working Committee (NWC) will be elected. It welcomed recent judgments of the Court of Appeal affirming the authority of the caretaker committee and called on aggrieved members to embrace reconciliation instead of pursuing further litigation at the Supreme Court.

The party further announced plans to expand its electronic membership registration to modernise its database and strengthen grassroots participation. NEC reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic principles, national unity, good governance, and the welfare of Nigerians, expressing optimism that renewed unity among members would position the PDP strongly ahead of the 2027 elections.
